Fall might have just started, but we already have winter on the brain. Don’t worry, we’re not skipping over apple-cider-and-crunchy-leaves season, but we are making sure your furry friends are prepared for the coldest time of year!
Having winter wear for your dogs is about more than just a (super adorable) fashion statement. There’s a common misconception that animals can be outside in the cold for an indefinite amount of time because their bodies are covered in fur, but that’s simply not the case. Once temperatures fall below 32°F (0°C), all our cats and dogs become prone to frostbite, and that can be scary for any Pet Parent. It’s important to keep them bundled up in a way that’s appropriate for their breed, so while a Husky or Malamute likely only needs a pair of boots, Greyhounds and Boston Terriers will require a warm jacket. It’s the same concept as if someone from L.A. came to visit a friend in Chicago during the winter. Both would be cold, but you’re likely to see the Californian with a few more layers on since they simply aren’t used to the weather.
If you’re a parent to a dog who loves getting extra cozy, a fitted fleece jacket is exactly what you need. Canada Pooch, Chilly Dog, and Apache River are great brands to check out, especially since they make coats so warm and soft that you'll actually be a little jealous of your pup. Putting them on is a snap, and the “swaddling” feeling can actually help ease anxiety during walks.
Other than the actual temperatures, one of winter's biggest hazards for dogs is deicing salt. Though they’re certainly durable, dog paws aren’t indestructible. Just as they can get burned on hot pavement in the summer, their pads are prone to chemical burns and/or toxic ingestion should they try to lick them clean after a walk. Long-haired breeds can also get salt stuck between their toes, leading to painful buildup. Needless to say, it’s smart to have a few pairs of boots on-hand!
Muttluks are our go-to brand of winter wear, because not only are they durable, but they’re just so darn comfy! The fleece is crazy soft and their adjustable sizes range from XXXS to XXL so you're guaranteed to find the perfect fit for your pooch’s paws. The soles are made of treated leather for durability and flexibility, while the straps have reflectors on them to keep things safe at night. But the best part? They’re MACHINE WASHABLE!!
